Abstract

Antecedentes: Actualmente, la evaluación del volumen muscular requiere técnicas invasivas o de imagen, lo que aumenta los costos y retrasa la evaluación, y las mediciones antropométricas con frecuencia son inexactas.

Objetivo: Desarrollar una fórmula matemática para estimar el volumen del cuádriceps.

Material y métodos: Se evaluaron 127 sujetos: 40 adultos sedentarios de 20 a 35 años, 47 atletas adultos de 20 a 45 años y 40 adultos sedentarios de 70 a 94 años. Se dividieron en grupos de desarrollo y de validación. Se realizaron mediciones de variables antropométricas y fuerza de agarre, y se desarrolló la fórmula de predicción del volumen del cuádriceps. Este último se comparó con el volumen muscular obtenido por tomografía computarizada (TC).

Resultados: Se encontró una relación lineal significativa entre el volumen del cuádriceps y la fuerza de agarre: grupo original R2 = 0.887 por TC y R2 = 0.901, grupo de validación R2 = 0.878 por TC y R2 = 0.907, y tras combinar ambos grupos R2 = 0.858 por TC y R2 = 0.902.

Conclusiones: El volumen del cuádriceps mediante la fórmula propuesta se alinea con las mediciones obtenidas con la TC.

Background: Currently, assessing muscle volume requires invasive techniques and/or imaging methods, which increases costs and delays evaluation. Moreover, anthropometric measurements are often inaccurate.

Objective: To develop a mathematical formula to estimate quadriceps volume.

Materials and methods: A total of 127 subjects were evaluated: 40 sedentary adults aged 20 to 35 years, 47 adult athletes aged 20 to 45 years, and 40 sedentary adults aged 70 to 94 years. They were divided into development and validation groups. Anthropometric variables and handgrip strength were measured, and a predictive formula for quadriceps volume was developed. The estimated volume was then compared with the muscle volume obtained via computed tomography (CT).

Results: A significant linear relationship was found between quadriceps volume and handgrip strength: original group R2 = 0.887 CT and R2 = 0.901, validation group R2 = 0.878 CT and R2 = 0.907, and combined groups R2 = 0.858 CT and R2 = 0.902.

Conclusions: Quadriceps volume estimated using the proposed formula aligns closely with measurements obtained through CT.
