Abstract
To respond to the certified bilingual teacher shortage, this study explored how to better support our bilingual teacher candidates to complete the program as expected and to achieve certificate at a south Texas HSI. Using a mixed methods design, the study investigated bilingual teacher candidates’ needs in terms of learning experiences that contribute to enhance their linguistic competencies and experiences of resilience to persist in the program and seek certification. Findings indicate that teacher preparation programs need to promote Spanish as a legitimate language for learning while leveraging candidates’ bilingual repertoire, implement mentoring and peer support systems to develop socio-emotional competencies and their resiliency to persist and achieve certification, as well as an asset practice-based approach to becoming a teacher.
