Description

Keith A. Ferguson is the son of UTB/TSC Associate Nursing Professor Sonia Cunningham and was a member of the elite New York Police Department Hercules Counter Terrorism Team. In January 2004, he suffered a heart attack while responding to a fellow officer’s call for back-up. While chasing a suspected illegal street vendor on foot, Ferguson suddenly collapsed while clutching his chest and died. He was 38 years old. In 2004, the annual Keith A. Ferguson Run/Walk in New York City was started to raise money for an endowment in his name. The August 2018 race was the last. The gracious support of runners/walkers/donors enabled the creation of the Endowed Professor of Criminal Justice, at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where Sonia Cunningham taught for many years. In 2018, Dr. Gordon Crews Chair, and Professor of Criminal Justice, was selected as the first Keith A. Ferguson Endowed Professor of Criminal Justice at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He began his occupancy of that position in the Fall of 2018.
