Abstract

In this piece, I recognize that illness narratives unfold within discursive realms and I offer various approaches for increasing sociocomunicative justice. First, I suggest conducting multi-sited fieldwork, and that this ethnographic method be buttressed by multi-sited theory. I emphasize the importance of hyper-self-reflexivity when attempting to diminish the structural inequalities which may inhibit the anthropologist in his or her attainment of illness narratives and their interpretation. I analyze a few brief narratives that emerged from my field research on humanized birth in Mexico in order to demonstrate how biopower predetermines what individuals are able to express in their narratives
