Abstract

Latina students across K-20 educational institutions in the United States have demonstrated the importance of challenging and working against the dehumanization they experience. This research takes a women of Color (WoC) feminist and intergenerational approach to illuminate the educational testimonios of Latina educators. We extend on a conceptualization of countermoves and countermovements, in conjunctions with and the product of cultural choques – collisions, to explore how the experiences of Latinas inform their desire to engage in a humanizing educational praxis centered in cariño – care. Through plática and testimonio methodologies, our analysis reveals how varying choques, humanizing and dehumanizing happen within the context of cultural domination, and how cariño as a countermovement becomes a potential outcome in how we engage with students in schooling spaces.
