Pathways to Freedom Project: Finding Matilda Hicks research report

The CHAPS Program sponsored a research trip to Georgia and Alabama in August of 2022 to search for the origins of the Nathaniel Jackson and a family slave named Matilda Hicks. A presentation was given to family, friends, and interested historians at the Jackson Ranch Church on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The report includes the results of the research trip, along with technological surveys of the Jackson Ranch Church property along the US-Mexico border in San Juan, Texas. TEKS-aligned lesson plans developed by regional teachers are also included in this report.

"Ancient Landscapes of South Texas Hiding in Plain Sight" is a comprehensive educational resource designed for K-13 students, aligning with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. Developed collaboratively by educators from diverse disciplines across the Rio Grande Valley and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) CHAPS Program, this lesson book offers a place-based curriculum that integrates natural and cultural history. It features easy-to-follow lesson plans that facilitate an engaging and immersive learning experience, aimed at deepening students' understanding of the unique landscapes and rich heritage of South Texas.

Used in conjunction with the CHAPS Program’s “Lower Rio Grande Valley Projectile Point Types” poster, this educational tool will interest and intrigue educators, students, and natural history tourists alike. Use of this app will allow the viewer to see projectile point artifacts in 3D as they come off the page. Each historic and prehistoric time period includes a description of the epoch itself, a short film illustrating the era, and detailed information identifying each individual projectile point artifact on the poster. Just download the app and point it at the poster. All seven time periods will appear, and you can navigate through each one by selecting the period name.

Rio Grande Valley Civil War Trail: 40 Lesson Plans

Dr. Rolando Avila, in this collection of forty lesson plans, brings the era of the American Civil War in the Rio Grande Valley to life for 4th, 7th, 8th, and 11th grade students. With them they now have an opportunity to understand the significant role the region played in the larger conflict. They also join college-level students at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in U.S. History I (HIST 1301), and thousands of residents and visitors in their discovery of this important and interesting era in American history.
