Abstract

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to detect the degree of improvement associated with parents’ perceptions of their child’s strengths, communication skills, social functioning, and their advocacy skills. Participants were 91 Latine parents who participated in a 10-session training program. Quantitative analyses of pre-post data contrasts on the Family-Outcome Survey-Revised Scale, GO4KIDDS Brief Adaptive Scale, and Quality of Play Questionnaire indicated statistically significant improvements. Analyses also indicated clinically significant changes for many Latine parents. Approximately 1 out of 2 Latine parents reported clinically significant improvements or improved without clinical significance as related to child conflict, and 1 out of 2 Latine parents reported clinically significant improvements or slight improvements in understanding their child’s rights. Approximately 1 out of 3 Latine parents reported clinically significant improvements or slight improvements in understanding their child’s strengths. The qualitative findings revealed themes of (a) developing knowledge about culturally adapted evidence-based interventions, (b) applying knowledge to help and support their children with autism spectrum disorder, and (c) perceiving a sense of community and familia in the parent-directed training program. We provide clinical implications for counselors and related helping professionals.
