Abstract
A literary criticism of the epic poem "Beowulf" and the book "The Awakening," by Kate Chopin is presented. It explores the female characters in the literary works which describe two archetypes of women, passive and aggressive-independent. It is inferred that the authors of the literary works criticize the patriarchal culture of the society.
