Abstract
Colegio Jacinto Treviño, based in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, was the first Chicano college in the United States. The Colegio met the same challenges that the national Chicano Movement endured. External threats, internal infighting, political mismanagement, and gender issues affected and attributed to the demise of the Colegio. This study provides a history of this alternative educational institution and highlights the founders of the college and the issues and people whom fought and supported its existence. It is crucial because the local college personified the national student and academic character of El Movimiento, the Chicana/o movement. In an attempt to reconfigure mainstream academia on their terms and to undo imposed discriminative limitations, the school leaders found themselves operating within limited dominant constructs.
