Abstract

The theme for Open Access Week 2023 is “Community over Commercialization”. This presentation will expand on the theme, discuss key points, and provide context on why we need to conceptualize Open Access, and academic publishing more broadly, from a community standpoint rather than as a commercial industry in which academics provide the (mostly free) labor. What are the risks of knowledge control by a small number of corporations? What are the costs to academics of the business models that academic publishers operate on? And what does the collection and use of personal data mean to society at large as publishers pivot to the business of surveillance and data brokering?
