Abstract
Large corporations enjoy many benefits, such as name recognition, prestige, and stature. In several respects, Fortune 1000 companies, the largest entities in the United States according to data complied by Fortune magazine, are deemed the pinnacles of success. Countless commercial organizations strive to win a spot on the list, while companies that are already on it jockey to improve their rankings. An investigation of the factors associated with the size of the 2011 Fortune 1000 firms, measured in both relative and absolute terms, shows that company age, headquarters location, and industry type are related to firm size. The findings also show that there is no shortcut to organizational success. Business leaders must take careful steps to ensure that their organizations adapt to the environmental changes they inevitably will encounter on the way to world-class status. ©2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
