Abstract

The need to transition toward green energy is imminent due to the depletion of traditional and non-renewable energy sources. Solar energy is one of the most promising forms of renewable energy due to its inexhaustibility and availability; however, current solar-energy harvesting technologies still face environmental challenges associated with the use of toxic materials. In this study, a low-cost and easy fabrication process using less toxic alternatives such as tin, as the basis for the light-absorbing perovskite layer is presented. The preparation consists of a one-step process in which methylammonium iodide and tin (II) chloride are used as precursors for perovskite crystal formation on the surface of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) fibers fabricated via Forcespinning method. Perovskite crystal formation was corroborated via X-ray diffraction analysis with the most common peaks at 2Ɵ angle of approximately 14° and 28°. Additionally, this study reports a systematic investigation of the chemical interactions in the solution formulation and the final product, conducted via infrared spectroscopy, where the CO moves from 1658 to 1645 cm−1. Finally, via XPS it demonstrates that PVP effectively suppresses the formation of Sn4+ while achieving a bandgap energy of 1.7 eV, proving the great potential of this material to be used as light harvester.
