Abstract
THE PRESENT CHAPTER EXPLAINS FOUR RECENT INSTANCES of APF in Oaxaca in order to identify the main actors, means and motivations involved, and to subsequently build a general explanation of such a phenomenon. The four episodes described and analyzed here are good examples of the most common manifestations of political factionalism in the state. Specifically, this chapter examines a major land dispute in 2002, an instance of violent electoral conflict in 2004, the 2006 “insurrection,” and political violence in the so-called Triqui Zone.
