Abstract
This chapter explores the intersection of fashion and androgynous and queer collective creativity and expression. Working with Walter Benjamin’s writings on material culture, Judith Butler’s ideas on gender performativity, and explorations of queer temporality (particularly with the work of José Esteban Muñoz), the chapter analyzes the way marginalized, and specifically queer, groups utilize fashion for political ends. The chapter explores the use of collaborative approaches to fashion and how these practices translate into the creation of a potentially egalitarian and politically charged fashion. Analyzing cooperative garment-making and outfit-formations, the chapter asks what characteristics of these activities can be translated into larger political movements for emancipatory politics.
