Abstract

Introduction

Radiology is a specialty that varies in the workplace setting that it requires. There are many radiologists that work remotely or from home. The capability to work remotely poses a potential limiting factor for networking opportunities for medical students who desire greater exposure to the field of radiology before their fourth-year electives. The presence of a radiology residency program associated with the medical school can increase resources and may influence match rates for students. This paper aims to investigate if Texas allopathic medical schools with a radiology residency program have a higher percentage of students matching into radiology compared to those without a radiology residency program.

Methods

The two medical schools with a radiology residency program that were selected include UT Southwestern Medical School (UTSW) and Dell Medical School (Dell). The two medical schools without a radiology residency program that were selected include the UTRGV School of Medicine (UTRGV) and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine (TTUHSC). These four schools were selected because they are all public Texas allopathic medical schools. Data was collected through each medical school’s online published data for 2024. The percentage of students matched to diagnostic and interventional radiology was calculated from the total number of students on the match list.

Results

UTSW had 3.57%, Dell had 8.33%, UTRGV had 2.22% and TTUHSC had 5.26% of students that matched into a diagnostic or interventional radiology residency program. UTSW and Dell both had a higher percentage of students match into a radiology residency program compared to UTRGV. However, TTUHSC had a higher percentage of matched students to a radiology residency program compared to UTSW, even though it does not have a radiology residency program.

Conclusion

A pattern between the presence of a radiology residency program associated with the medical school and the percentage of students matched into diagnostic and interventional radiology residency programs cannot be established at this time. A limitation of this project is that the data only includes students who gave permission for their data to be published. Additionally, the data from UTRGV did not differentiate if those matched to a transitional or preliminary year were also matched to an advanced program. Future research endeavors should continue to explore potential patterns as new residency placement data are published yearly.
