Abstract
A known benefit of open access (OA) for publishing authors is a larger audience, with a proposed downstream effect of increased citations. This has been studied in multiple internal medicine disciplines such as cardiology and oncology, yet to our knowledge this remains undefined for general internal medicine.1,2 The decision to publish OA or subscription access (SA) has multiple individual and systemic consequences.3 We aimed to assess whether publishing OA had an association with citation counts in high-impact general internal medicine journals.
