Abstract
Introduction: As the field of podiatry advances, it is valuable to identify the areas of research that receive the greatest focus. Evaluating popular topics published in podiatric medicine and surgery peer-reviewed journals helps us consider current trends in procedures, surgeon preferences, and current interest in our profession.
Aim: To evaluate current trends in podiatric medicine and surgery through compiling topics published in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery (JFAS) and their frequency.
Methods: JFAS was selected for our analysis as it has the highest impact factor out of the indexed journals in our profession. We used Scopus to identify articles published in JFAS from 2020 to 2022. Scopus identifies topics by analyzing the content of research articles, extracting keywords, and using algorithms to group related themes. Experts then review and refine these groupings to ensure they are accurate and up to date.
Results: We extracted 769 articles covering 366 topics in the journal during the period. We noted that 22 of the articles did not have any identifiable topics. The topics that had the greatest number of articles identified were “fracture” (n=142), “internal fixation” (n=108), “bone” (n=97), “computed tomography” (n=88), and “hallux” (n=87). In addition, we found that 182 of the identified topics had only one article associated with them.
Conclusions: While we did not evaluate the impact of each article, our results highlight the current trends in our profession’s interest. Future studies will investigate the impact of articles in relation to different topics.
