The Role of Interpreting and Translation in Promoting Linguistic Human Rights

Abstract

Translation and interpreting (T/I) are often overlooked as an element in the broader language rights discussion. Even so, scholars in the relatively small field of Translation Studies have called attention to the role of T/I in ensuring the rights of individuals in multilingual societies. Along those lines, this paper will deal with the role of translation and interpreting precisely as a means to protect linguistic minorities. It will address how T/I are theorised as a tool to help grant Linguistic Human Rights. Then it will deal with matters of implementation, specifically by considering the challenges of turning this theory into a reality, which range from negative public attitudes to lack of professionalisation of the service. The paper will conclude with considerations of the path going forward.
