Abstract
Beginning with the concept of a gaming lobby in which players are invited into a game but are also given a space to exert some agency in shaping the experience, Saenz describes a writing assignment in which students invented a parking game to address the problems of parking at their university. In three iterations of the assignment, student agency and teacher perspective shifted, and the fun or efficacy of the game assignment were challenged. Only after Saenz “returned to the lobby” and built in a richer narrative did the assignment allow for the type of intellectual work that he had hoped the game would provide.
