Interview with Clarita Fajutag on Filipino Communities in the Rio Grande Valley
Clarita Fajutag and Courtney Wai
Interviewee: Clarita Fajutag
Interviewer: Courtney Wai
Sunday, June 18, 2012 at 4:30 pm
The interview took place at Clarita’s house, in her living room. Both participants are local school teachers, who participated in the Porciones to Colonias project.
The transcription that follows details Clarita’s experience as a Filipino in the Valley. As one of the first families, Clarita has witnessed a small community of just five families blossom into a larger network of Filipinos that now needs to rent a ballroom to host Christmas parties. Most depictions of the Valley—both historical and academic—paint the evolving relationship between whites and Mexicans, but in doing so, they hide a very important narrative: that of a growing and thriving Filipino community, rich with a fresh perspective on everyday life.
