Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative study was to analyze Lauryn C. Salazar’s mariachi/educational leadership style by focusing on her contributions to the community of Texas Tech University and Tarleton State University. Leadership styles, as defined by Northouse, 2021, refer to the distinct approaches leaders use to guide, motivate, and influence their teams. After examining Salazar’s background to place her motivations and actions in the proper context, this study analyzed what Salazar did, how she perceived her actions, and how others perceived her actions. The life history written by the researcher was primarily based on data collected through eight interviews; however, the researcher also utilized other available published sources to supplement the interview data. The researcher used interview data as the primary source, supplemented by relevant published materials that provided additional context to the participants' narratives. Purposeful sampling was used to identify individuals with lived experiences related to the topic. The study was grounded in a constructivist paradigm, recognizing the co-construction of meaning between the researcher and participants. Emphasis was placed on understanding each participant’s story in depth, acknowledging subjectivity, and engaging in reflective practices to ensure trustworthiness.
This study examined three questions, RQ1: How does Salazar perceive the accomplishments she has been part of, and how does she view her role in them? RQ2: What are the lived experiences and challenges faced by Dr. Lauryn Salazar as a woman of color in mariachi leadership, and how has she navigated these challenges to achieve success? RQ3: How does a prominent female mariachi leader at a university describe her leadership journey, including the challenges and barriers she has overcome to achieve success?
