Abstract
The article analyzes American writer Cormac McCarthy's "All the pretty horses' and the University of Texas Rio Grand Valley's (UTRGV) mascot, The vaquero, to argue that the U.S.- Mexico border is written to negate national guilt and responsibility associated with a history of conflict, exclusion and violence. It argues how the U.S.-Mexico border is often ignored in discussions of the American South and is usually analyzed as part of the West or Southwest.
