A New Era: The University of Texas Pan American / Pan American University: The First 60 Years
Pan American University. Media Services
This 1989 video production combines two segments documenting the history and future of the University of Texas–Pan American. The first portion, “A New Era: The University of Texas Pan American,” marks the institution’s September 1, 1989, merger into the University of Texas System. It highlights the university’s rapid growth, its role serving first-generation students from the Rio Grande Valley, expanded academic programs, economic development initiatives (including the SEED program), and the advantages of joining the UT System for South Texas.
The second segment, “Pan American University: The First 60 Years,” traces the institution’s origins from its founding as Edinburg College in 1927 through its evolution into Edinburg Junior College, Pan American College (1952), and Pan American University (1971). It covers early campus life, key leaders such as R.P. Ward and Ralph Schilling, the move to the present campus, the development of student organizations and athletics, and the university’s expanding academic offerings and community impact in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
