Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the contributory effect of Virtues in differentiating one’s ability to regulate emotion. Convenience sampling will be utilized to obtain a total of 102 participants who had adverse childhood experiences. Participants will be recruited via collaboration with local behavioral counseling agencies. Two behavioral health counseling agencies located in Hidalgo County, including Corazon Consulting, Inc. and A Better Tomorrow, LLC, have agreed to be part of the present study. The research packets used in this study consisted of two parts: 1) a demographic information form, and 2) a research questionnaire that includes three instruments (see Appendix). Participants were asked to respond to each item in each of the instruments by selecting a choice on a scale that reflected how well the item best described them. The demographic information form and research questionnaire are described in more detail below. The survey questionnaire includes a total of 107 testing items, and 20 minutes are expected to complete the survey. While there has been extensive research completed on the topics of adverse childhood experiences and emotional regulation individually, limited research has been completed examining the outcomes of having adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on an individual’s emotional regulation (ER). Even less research has examined ACEs, ER, and Virtues (integrity, courage, committed action, practical wisdom, and emotional transcendence) together. The literature review demonstrated the negative emotional outcomes that result from enduring adversity in childhood and the inability to regulate one’s emotions, while also noting the positive outcomes of possessing a virtue(s). Participants will be recruited via collaboration with two local behavioral counseling agencies in Hidalgo County. The two agencies are considered outpatient services provided. Outpatient therapy would be defined as any psychotherapy service offered when the client is not admitted to a hospital, residential program, or other inpatient setting. Outpatient therapy is a resource for individuals seeking support for mental health and/or substance use concerns who do not require round-the-clock support or safety monitoring.
