Description
Goldsby Poag Goza recounts her family’s move to Mercedes, Texas in 1909, where her father ran a feed store and dairy while her mother taught school and later managed the store. She describes early irrigation projects, the arrival of the railroad, and the U.S. Cavalry’s presence during World War I, which shaped the town’s growth and community life. Her memories include local schools, bandit scares, the Depression’s hardships, and the revival of agriculture through produce shipping innovations. Goza herself became a teacher, married a school superintendent, raised four children, and taught in Mercedes until retiring in 1977, later returning part-time in 1984.
