UTPA Athletics Accepts Invitation to Join WAC Starting in 2013-14
Dec. 19, 2012 -- EDINBURG, Texas -- The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced in a press conference on Wednesday that they have formally accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in all sports effective July 1, 2013. "Joining the WAC is a wonderful opportunity for UT-Pan American," UTPA President Dr. Robert S. Nelsen said. " Our students will finally have a voice in NCAA decisions. They will also have an opportunity to compete for national championships. Our student-athletes and our coaches have worked very hard to get us to this point in time. I am very proud of them." The WAC membership for 2013-14 is currently scheduled to include UTPA, California State University Bakersfield, Chicago State University, the University of Idaho, New Mexico State University, Seattle University and Utah Valley University, as well as associate members Sacramento State University in baseball, the University of Northern Colorado in baseball and women's swimming and diving, the University of North Dakota in women's swimming and diving, and Northern Arizona University in women's swimming and diving. The WAC sponsors all 14 of the Broncs' current sports, including men's and women's cross country, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. All of the Broncs teams have been competing in the Great West Conference since the 2009-10 season, with the exception of men's tennis, which is a member of the Southland Conference, and men's golf, which is part of the America Sky Conference. For the first time since the 1997-98 season, when the Broncs were members of the Sun Belt Conference, UTPA women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball, women's tennis and women's golf will be able to compete for an automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament. Men's tennis and men's golf are currently able to compete for automatic qualifiers in the Southland Conference and America Sky Conference, respectively. Cross country and track and field qualifiers are based on times and distances, not conference championships. "This is a defining moment in the history of UTPA Athletics, and it has been a long time coming. We have been working hard for the last few years to transform this department into one that is no longer content with simply being at the Division I level, but instead has a strong group of student-athletes and coaches who can help us compete for championships while excelling in the classroom and the community. This is another step in that transformation process," UTPA Director of Athletics Chris King said. "Aligning ourselves with a nationally recognized and well-branded conference such as the WAC will allow us to gain national exposure for both UTPA and the entire Rio Grande Valley."

Bronc TV News - Bronc Round Up 2011
The inaugural Bronc Round Up, which will take place August 26-28, is a fun, yet informational conference planned to ease the transition from high school to college of entering freshmen by introducing new students to all aspects of UTPA before classes begin in the fall.
"I am excited for Bronc Round Up because every time I visit the campus I feel more comfortable attending school there," said Bauer, who plans to major in biology.
On day one of Bronc Round Up, students will meet at the Fieldhouse Courtyard to register for three full days of activities. Students will be able to familiarize themselves with their college at a Meet Your College Open House, where they can attend concurrent sessions providing information on their chosen field of study. Fun evening activities, such as a pool and pizza party, intramural tournament play and a floating cinema, are planned to give students a chance to meet fellow Broncs.
Day two begins at the Fieldhouse with a Java Wake-Up from 8-9:45 a.m., followed by a Student Services fair and sessions on academic programming, student services and organizations and Bronc traditions.
Day three, which is optional, will give students a chance to locate their classes with help from the Visitors Center staff as well as buy necessary books and supplies. The UTPA shuttle will stop on the hour and half hour at Heritage Hall, the UTPA Bookstore and Walmart from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Sally Mendiola, associate director of admissions and new student services, said the University wanted new students to receive more guidance than what is currently offered during the two-day freshman orientation.
"Orientation surveys indicated too much information was provided during a short time span," Mendiola said. "Surveys also indicated students wanted to select the informational sessions that best suited them. Bronc Round Up will not only give students more time to adjust to the college environment, but will also allow them to choose the informational sessions they will attend."
An Orientation Committee, made up of UTPA faculty and staff, meets annually to schedule orientation and fine tune the event. This year the committee created a sub-group to study ways to improve new student orientation, and subsequently adopted a proposal that added a three-day Bronc Round Up conference to the two-day orientation schedule to build on the information already provided to students during the orientation sessions, Mendiola said.
"We hope new Broncs will find UTPA rich in tradition and filled with opportunity as they begin their higher education. We would like Bronc Round Up to be an event expected by new students and one that they will not want to miss," she said.

Natural Painting at UTPA
The art historians welcome you to the joys of discovery and visual excitement in art and architectural history. Our specializations enable us to provide thorough coverage of the Pre-Hispanic, Viceregal ("Spanish Colonial") and modern art and architecture of Latin America and of the U.S. people of Hispanic cultural heritage. Because the UTPA Art Department is alone in the U.S. in dedicating upper division courses single-mindedly to the art and architectural history of Latin America and of the Hispanic people in the U.S., it can do full justice to the richness and variety of this heritage in a way appropriate to the literally Pan-American cultural and geographic location of UTPA. We invite everyone to join us in this zestful quest for the indescribable humanistic riches, fulfillment and self-revelation inherent to Latin American, Latino, and Pan-Iberian art and architecture set in the solid foundation of their worldwide artistic context.

UTPA News - Art foundry receives donation from Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department
Magdiel "Fonzi" Alfonso meticulously sprinkled a white plaster mixture over the clay bust of Medal of Honor recipient U.S. Army Sgt. Jose Lopez before carefully covering it with a fiber for added protection. The mold will go through a series of processes before it shapes about 200 pounds of bronze into a statue. That's when Alfonso and a team of other artists at The University of Texas-Pan American's art foundry will need to take serious precautions, as the bronze being poured into the mold can reach 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit. "It feels like you have a hot iron on your skin," Alfonso, who graduated from UTPA earlier this month with a bachelor of fine arts degree and continues to work with the University's art department, said about getting close to the foundry. The artists wear protective clothing to avoid injury, but the foundry's supplies were limited — until now. The Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department donated six sets of protective helmets, jackets, pants and gloves to the foundry to keep artists safe when working with the molten metal. Shawn Snider, the fire department's chief, said the gear is no longer useable by firefighters to enter burning buildings, but is safe for the artists to use when working in the foundry. "I think for the intended purpose here, which is to protect students who are learning a trade and a craft in a university setting, it is more than appropriate and is very good use of equipment that otherwise would be destroyed," Snider said. "I'm really happy they have a use for it." This is the first time the department has donated old gear to the University, but it has given items to volunteer firefighters in Mexico before, Snider said. The art department has some fire-resistant clothing, but those articles of clothing are old. The fire department's old gear is much more effective in protecting the artists and students when they are pouring the bronze into molds, said Douglas Clark, a master sculptor and lecturer in UTPA's art department. "This is much newer and much more comfortable," Clark said. "It'll be a great help to us." It takes between three and five people to prepare and pour bronze into molds for sculptures, Clark said. The department's donation will provide protection for more people. All students are required to view safety videos and perform a "dress rehearsal" of all the equipment before working with the bronze or other metal, Clark said. Since opening a year and a half ago, the UTPA art foundry has created several sculptures for area birding centers, municipal centers and local and state cemeteries, as well as produced about 100 student sculptures, Clark said.
